If there’s one thing that I love about fashion month, it’s the new excitement surrounding fashion and artistic expression that always seems to follow in its wake. Whether that’s planning what will be on your new-in list for your wardrobe next season or the vicious cycle of going Pinterest-crazy after the runway shows finish, fashion month runways are an endless source of inspiration for many – one of which that did not disappoint was Hugo Boss.
Hugo Boss A/W 19 was a cool and collected show. Known for it’s city-chic persona, sleek silhouettes and sophisticated colour palettes dominated this season’s show. From camels to greys, vivid pinks to cobalt blues – Boss had it all. This season’s accessories were edgy and classic, with beautifully crafted leather handbags and shoes that were the perfect compliment to the line itself.
The Feeling’s Neutral
A major trend that we’ve seen this year for Spring and Summer has been the return of neutrals to the street-style scene. Sometimes known for its bold obscurities, I for one, am quite glad to see neutrals returning as a preferred palette. This season’s Boss runway made it quite clear that this trend won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
Personally, I’m a huge fan of a new twist on a classic look – in outerwear especially. This season’s fresh take included that of drop-shoulder detailing and the elongated cape that always seems to come back into fashion year after year. I love the leather accent on an otherwise rather feminine piece. One thing that I especially love about Hugo Boss is that the ready-to-wear collections always have feminine pieces that can be toughened up, or edgy pieces that can be made delicate – which makes for a very versatile collection indeed.
Power Dressing: 101
If there is one thing that Hugo Boss does well, it’s power dressing. Suiting, tailoring, you name it – there’s a spin on it. Lately, I’ve had a mini-obsession with power dressing. In this portion of the collection, the drop-shoulder silhouettes are integrated again along with the addition of midi-dresses and multi-dimensional textures. My personal favourite was the mock-neck midi dress with button detailing up the side. This look could easily be plucked straight from the runway and be worn on the street – styled to suit a variety of personal taste. Perhaps add a leather jacket or a trench coat, boots or stilettos and you’re on your way.
The integration of burgundy throughout the collection brings forward an autumnal colour palette whilst still keeping the tones in this portion rather neutral. Another trend that is being seen throughout the shows in New York this season is relaxed tailoring. Skin-tight bodycon dresses are having a moment out of the spotlight – which I’m actually quite excited for.
Pretty in Pink
The ‘WOW’ moment of the collection was definitely the portion where bright pinks took center stage. We’re seeing this colour in tailoring and outerwear, both incredibly classic shapes with the trendy punch of pink to keep things fresh. This year, pressed rose has been the ‘it colour’, so it only makes sense that the vibrancy is kicked up a notch for the autumn season. Pairing well with burgundy accessories and the previously neutral colour palette, this statement colour is proving to be a massive hit amongst designers this autumn/winter.
Whilst looks are typically turned up for the runway, the Hugo Boss A/W 19 show proved that statement looks can actually be quite wearable. By making the vibrant pink the focus of the look – styling is kept streamlined with tonal accessories and deep neutrals.
Whimsical Whites
The show closed on a lovely note with beautiful creams and whites; a whimsical end to an enchanting show. The creamy leathers mixed so well with the dreamy silks that were seemingly effortlessly draped over the models that walked the runway. The theme of burgundy that ran throughout the collection was present in the closing section by way of streamlined footwear and over-knee boots that were to die for.
If it were up to me, I’d pluck each of these three looks directly off the runway to add to my current wardrobe collection. The middle look featuring the teddy coat was one of my absolute favourite looks of the entire Hugo Boss A/W 19 collection. The blend of textures and the full embracing of the beige trend is one that I’m completely behind – not to mention, it is possible to wear all beige and not look boring.
