How to Nail Parisian Chic

“No one does chic and effortless like the French.” – InStyle Magazine, September 2017

If one was to think of Parisian style, I don’t have a doubt that the words ‘effortless’ and ‘chic’ are somewhere on the list. The look that pops into mind when I think of French style is a refined monochromatic palette. I think blacks, greys, navy blues, creams, and scarlet hues. Stripes, leather, and sleek accessories also come to mind. I wanted to play off of the idea of the classic feminine and romantic details whilst keeping the look casual enough for the day to day. When I think of an everyday outfit, my uniform in the autumn is always a pairing of denim and a warm knit, and I wanted to put a French twist on my go-to look.

Paris is a city with multiple style personalities, but there is one element that usually stands out. Comfort is key. While you’ll see stilettos on the street, you’ll see more people wearing trainers, flat Chelsea boots, or a lower block heel for all day comfort. Personally, I love wearing heels – but I do appreciate when trainers are on trend in a city where you know you’ll be walking a lot. Not only does it save your feet from hurting, but it also gives you a solid base when planning what looks you’ll wear.

In the look that I’ve put together today, I’ve gone for a lovely cream knit sweater with black stripes. The thin stripes keep the feminine, dainty detail even though the sweater has a slightly bulkier silhouette. Because I’ve got more volume in the top half of my outfit, I’ve gone for a pair of vintage wash skinny denim with a high-rise cut to elongate the look of my legs and streamline the look. For shoes, I’ve added my favourite leather boots from TopShop – which, if you follow my Instagram, you’ll have seen them loads of times no doubt. These boots have been my go-to when I’m at a loss of what to wear, ever since I picked them up for London Fashion Week last February.

Power red is having a moment on the catwalks, especially for Paris Fashion Week this year. I wanted to inject a little of that colour into this look as well – but in a different way than a red lip. (I still have yet to find the perfect red lipstick, if you have any suggestions – let me know in the comments!) I’ve gone for accessories that add the pop of red that I was looking for – I have been OBSESSED with this red clutch as of late. It’s perfect for if you only want to carry around the bare minimum, and it’s been what I’ve reached for nearly every day in the past couple weeks.
