PEEK BEHIND THE SCENES.

Colour Series: Grey Daze

Colours and trends come and go with the seasons, but I think we can all agree that grey is a colour that has stood the test of time and become a classic wardrobe staple. Personally, I adore the easiness that it brings to my wardrobe. Moving in to the New Year, I love the idea of keeping my wardrobe fresh and light. Now, this may be a little tough for me as I’m known to wear head-to-toe black for most of the cold seasons – but I think that there is quite a luxurious feel to incorporating grey into your looks, and the versatility makes the colour easy to wear for anyone.

For this look, I wanted to channel the idea of the ‘groutfit’ – a sometimes unpopular outfit combination. But instead of going full-on grey, I opted for a monochromatic pairing of a turtleneck knit and wool coat. I love how these two colours play off of each other so well. The difference between the two shades is quite subtle. In fact, the easiest way to tell them apart may be by texture instead. To go with the greys, I decided to keep the look light and fresh with a pair of girlfriend denim. This pair of jeans has been the most reached for in my wardrobe for the past few weeks. Lately I’ve been enjoying the straight-leg silhouette and the relaxed nature of the pant.

I really like pairing black accessories with this look, it pulls slightly away from the prominent grey hues and adds a bit of dimension and depth. Don’t get me wrong – I love a grey handbag, but in this case, it likely would have washed out my skin tone. I went for matching textures in my accessories, both in a black leather. These boots you’ve likely seen millions of times – I just can’t stop wearing them. They’re honestly my favourite shoe of the moment, and I’m nearly at the point where I’ll have to have them resoled. My handbag is my chuck-all-in bag of the moment. It’s big, spacious, but still looks rather good on the arm if you ask me. I like being able to carry my important bits as well as a camera nearly everywhere I go – this handbag is perfect for just that.

THE COAT MAKES THE OUTFIT

And I will stand by this statement as long as the temperature is below 45 degrees. Minnesotan winters are known for getting rather cold (last week was around -15 degrees, YIKES!) so naturally, the main piece of your outfit that most people will notice is the coat. Personally, I like to go for classic cut silhouettes and experiment with the colours and textures of coats in the winter. My favourite coat thus far has to be the one featured in this post from the H&M Studio Line. I love the almost furry texture – it’s a wool blend, but the fibers are a bit longer than a felted wool coat that many are used to seeing. This texture gives the coat a bit more interest, and kicks the snuggle factor up a few notches. Along with this coat, I’ve rounded up some of my favourite grey coats that are available – most are from Nordstrom (my go-to for one stop shopping at the moment), but I’ve got a couple with high-street prices in as well as to fit multiple budgets.

KNITWEAR – AN ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL

One wardrobe staple that I could not get through the day without would be my knitwear, especially my overly extensive collection of grey knitwear. I like the difference of the softer greys for knits compared to the deeper black tones that one would normally see in outerwear during the colder months. Currently, I can’t get enough of the turtleneck silhouette. I always like to keep my neck warm with a scarf, but on the days where it can get really cold – a turtleneck is the perfect option for a bit of added warmth. I especially love this knit from Banana Republic, it’s an old one but such a goodie. They’ll come out with a slightly different version every year because it’s such a classic, and I always find myself reaching for this particular knit at least once a week.

FOR THOSE LESS INCLINED TOWARD AN ALL OUT GREY

An all over grey look isn’t for everyone. If you’re the person that likes grey, but only in small amounts – accessories are the perfect way to introduce the colour to your wardrobe without going grey-crazy. My favourite way to test drive a colour is with a thick scarf or a handbag. It’s small pops of a colour that can add dimension to your look as well as visual interest without detracting from the rest of your outfit. Another way to add in small bits of grey to your look can be in your jewelry. Maybe go for a druzy stone necklace or simple stud earrings. Even a dainty bracelet round the wrist would be a perfect accent piece.

Until next, xoxo.
